A spread of Indian food representing the flavours of Daman and Vapi

Local Food Guide · Daman & Vapi

Where I actually eat.

Daman is home — so this isn't a tourist list. It's the honest, personal roster of places I send friends and family to, in Daman and just across the border in Vapi. One place, one plate, one story each.

A quick, honest note: everything here is a personal recommendation, not a paid one. I've written each place around what it's genuinely loved for. Dish photos are representative of the food, not the exact plates — go taste the real thing.

Daman · Falooda & Juices

Bholenath — Falooda, Juices & a Slow Daman Evening

If Daman evenings had a flavour, it would be a tall glass of falooda at Bholenath, old Hindi songs playing in the background.

A tall glass of layered rose falooda beside a fresh fruit juice
Falooda — the cool, layered treat Bholenath is loved for.

Quick take

  • A beloved Daman juice-and-falooda spot in the Teen Batti / Dilip Nagar area.
  • Go for the falooda, fresh juices, fruit salads and sandwiches.
  • Easy, family-friendly, old-Hindi-songs kind of place — perfect for an evening out.

Every town has one place that isn't about the food so much as the feeling, and in Daman, for me, that place is Bholenath. It sits in the busy Teen Batti side of Dilip Nagar, and it's the kind of spot you drift to on a warm evening without really deciding to. The draw is simple and cold and sweet: falooda.

If you've never had it, falooda is less a drink and more a small architecture in a glass — soft rose-scented vermicelli, slippery basil seeds that pop between your teeth, chilled milk, a swirl of rose syrup and, if you're doing it right, a scoop of kulfi melting slowly on top. It's dessert, drink and nostalgia all at once. Alongside it, Bholenath does the honest juice-centre classics: fresh fruit juices, cold shakes, fruit salads and sandwiches for when someone in the group insists they're "not in the mood for sweet" (they are).

Some places feed your hunger. This one just makes the evening longer.

What I love is how unpretentious it is. Families squeeze onto shared tables, old film songs hum in the background, and nobody's rushing you. It's the sort of place you take relatives who are visiting, or where you land after a walk, or where a plan quietly happens without anyone planning it. Order the falooda, get a juice on the side, and stay a while.

Daman · Non-Veg & Seafood

Gurukripa — Daman's Old-School Non-Veg & Seafood Address

Running since the late 1970s, Gurukripa is where Daman's coastal, Portuguese-tinged love of seafood shows up on a plate.

A hearty non-vegetarian spread with curry, kebabs and naan
The kind of hearty non-veg spread Gurukripa built its name on.

Quick take

  • A Daman institution — the multi-cuisine kitchen has been serving since 1979.
  • Come for the seafood: prawns, local fish and the famous Damanese-style fish fry.
  • Also strong on chicken and biryani; a reliable, old-faithful non-veg choice.

Daman sits on the sea, and its food remembers that. There's a coastal, faintly Portuguese streak running through the local non-veg kitchen, and few places carry it as comfortably as Gurukripa, which has been feeding this town since 1979. It's not fancy. It's the kind of dependable, been-here-forever place that a town quietly organises its appetite around.

The move here is seafood. Regulars will tell you about the prawns and the local fish, and above all the Damanese-style fish fry — a preparation that tastes of the coast it comes from. Beyond the sea, the kitchen keeps the non-veg comfort classics coming: chicken done several ways, and a biryani that does the job. It's multi-cuisine on paper, but you come for the fish and the familiarity.

Every coastal town has a kitchen that tastes like the sea nearby. In Daman, this is one of them.

What makes it a recommendation rather than just a meal is the sense of continuity — the feeling that people have been sitting at these tables, arguing over the last prawn, for decades. If you want to understand Daman's non-veg side, you start here.

Daman · Pure-Veg Thali

Sovereign — A Pure-Veg Gujarati Thali by the Sea

Daman's go-to pure-vegetarian hotel, where an unlimited Gujarati thali arrives plate after plate with a sea breeze on the side.

An abundant pure-vegetarian Indian thali with many small bowls
The many-bowl abundance of a proper Gujarati thali.

Quick take

  • A pure-vegetarian, sea-facing hotel in Nani Daman — a rarity in a seafood town.
  • The specialty is the Gujarati (and Punjabi) thali, available limited and unlimited.
  • Best for families, groups and anyone who wants a full, satisfying veg meal.

In a town that leans so hard into seafood, Sovereign holds down the pure-vegetarian corner with real pride — and a sea view to match. It's one of the few dedicated pure-veg hotels in Daman, sitting along the Sea Face side of Nani Daman, and its calling card is the thali.

A Gujarati thali is its own little theatre: a ring of small bowls that keep getting refilled whether you asked or not — dal, kadhi, a couple of shaaks, a farsan, rotli, rice, salad, chaas and something sweet to round it off, the whole thing balancing sweet, salty, sour and spicy in a way one dish never could. Sovereign does it in both limited and unlimited formats, which means you can go careful or go all in. There's Punjabi thali too for the days you want it richer and creamier.

A thali isn't a meal so much as a philosophy: a little of everything, and nobody leaves hungry.

I send every pure-veg or Jain visitor here without hesitation. It's generous, it's clean, it's satisfying, and eating a full thali while the sea sits just outside is a very Daman kind of pleasure.

Daman · Ice Cream

Sharma — Where a Daman Evening Melts to an End

Every good night out needs a last stop, and mine is an ice cream at Sharma.

Colourful Indian ice cream scoops and a matka kulfi with falooda
Ice cream and kulfi — the sweet full stop on a Daman evening.

Quick take

  • My pick for ice cream in Daman — the perfect after-dinner stop.
  • Think scoops, sundaes, and Indian classics like kulfi and kulfi-falooda.
  • Simple, sweet, and exactly what a warm coastal night calls for.

There's a certain rule to eating out in a warm, humid, coastal town: however full you are, there is always room for ice cream. It's not greed, it's climate. And when the meal is done and the night is still warm, my last stop is Sharma for something cold and sweet.

Ice cream in India is its own happy world — beyond the scoops and sundaes there's kulfi, denser and slower to melt, often paired with falooda for that chewy-creamy contrast, and rolled through with cardamom, saffron, pista and rose. That's the register I love here: unfussy, generous, a little old-fashioned in the best way. You order, you stand around, you argue about flavours, and the day sort of exhales.

In a coastal town, there's always room for ice cream. It's not greed, it's climate.

It's a small recommendation, but the small ones matter. A meal you'll forget; the ice cream you had afterwards, on a good night with good people, you somehow don't.

Daman · Biryani & Kebab

Blue Lagoon — Hot Biryani & Mini Kalmi Kabab

Pocket-friendly and reliably satisfying, Blue Lagoon in Tin Batti is my Daman answer to a serious biryani craving.

A plate of hot chicken biryani beside mini kalmi kebabs
Biryani and kalmi kabab — the pairing to order here.

Quick take

  • A pocket-friendly restaurant in the Tin Batti area of Daman.
  • Order the hot biryani and the mini kalmi kabab together.
  • Good for a casual, satisfying non-veg meal without ceremony.

When the craving is specifically for biryani — properly hot, fragrant, straight-from-the-pot biryani — my Daman default is Blue Lagoon, tucked into the busy Tin Batti area. It's an easygoing, pocket-friendly place, the kind you rate on the food rather than the tablecloths.

The order that makes it worth writing about is the pairing: a plate of hot biryani with a side of mini kalmi kabab. If you haven't met kalmi kabab, it's the small, marinated, char-grilled chicken pieces — think tender, spiced, slightly smoky bites that you eat with mint chutney and raw onion. Biryani gives you the comfort of rice and slow-cooked spice; the kalmi gives you the char and the protein hit. Together they cover every craving a hungry evening can throw at you.

Order the biryani for comfort and the kalmi kabab for the char. Get both.

It's not trying to be a special-occasion place, and that's exactly its charm — dependable, affordable, and squarely about the food.

Daman · Dhaba

Veera Da Dhaba — Butter Chicken, Parathas & a Village on the Vapi Road

Part restaurant, part Punjabi-village theme park — Veera Da Dhaba is where you go for butter chicken and a whole evening's worth of atmosphere.

Dhaba-style butter chicken in an iron kadai with a flaky paratha
Rich, creamy butter chicken with a flaky paratha — dhaba comfort.

Quick take

  • A Punjabi village-themed dhaba on the Daman–Vapi road, complete with charpai seating.
  • The order: butter chicken with a hot, flaky paratha.
  • Great for families — there's a play area, live music and a whole experience beyond the food.

Some meals are about the plate; Veera Da Dhaba is about the whole evening. Set on the road between Daman and Vapi, it leans fully into a Punjabi-village theme — charpais to sit on, rustic décor, and, on the right night, a live singer, a kids' play area, even little extras like portrait sketching. It's a proper family outing dressed up as dinner.

Underneath the theming, though, the food holds its own. The signature is butter chicken — that rich, glossy, tomato-and-cream gravy that has quietly become the ambassador of North Indian food worldwide — and you scoop it up with a hot, flaky paratha straight off the tawa. The menu runs both veg and non-veg (kebabs, prawns and masala dishes get a lot of love), but the butter-chicken-and-paratha combination is the heart of it.

Come for the butter chicken; stay for the charpai, the music and the childhood you forgot you missed.

It's the place I suggest when a group wants dinner and an outing rolled into one — a little loud, a little kitschy, and genuinely good fun with genuinely good gravy.

Vapi · Non-Veg & Grills

Nawab — Vapi's Go-To for Non-Veg & Grills

Just across from Daman, Nawab Family Dhaba is the Vapi name that comes up when anyone wants tandoori, grills and hearty non-veg.

A sizzling mixed grill platter of tandoori kebabs
Tandoori and grills — the reason to make the short drive to Vapi.

Quick take

  • A popular non-vegetarian dhaba on the Silvassa–Vapi road, an easy hop from Daman.
  • Known for tandoori and grilled dishes, plus North Indian and Chinese.
  • Generous portions at pocket-friendly prices — a solid group meal.

Daman and Vapi are close enough that "let's just go to Vapi for dinner" is a completely normal sentence, and when the plan is non-veg and grills, Nawab is the name that surfaces. Set on the Silvassa–Vapi road, it's a busy, well-loved family dhaba that has built a big, loyal following.

The strength here is the tandoor and the grill: tandoori chicken, kebabs and the char-kissed things that come off high heat, plus the North Indian gravies to go with your rotis and the Indo-Chinese dishes (chilli chicken and the like) that every good Indian non-veg joint keeps on the menu. It's not precious food; it's satisfying, well-priced, order-a-lot-and-share food — exactly what you want when a group is hungry.

Some kitchens whisper. A good grill kitchen just delivers — hot, smoky, generous.

For anyone in Daman with a non-veg craving and a few kilometres of patience, Nawab is worth the short drive.

Vapi · Pure-Veg

Papillon — Vapi's Pure-Veg All-Rounder

Running since 1990, Hotel Papillon is Vapi's dependable pure-veg address for dahi vada, chole bhature, South Indian and thali.

Chole bhature with a bowl of dahi vada
Chole bhature and dahi vada — Papillon's pure-veg comfort.

Quick take

  • A pure-vegetarian multi-cuisine restaurant in Vapi, running since 1990.
  • Loved for dahi vada, chole bhature, South Indian dishes and thali.
  • A safe, satisfying bet for vegetarian and Jain diners.

If Nawab is the Vapi answer for non-veg, Papillon is its pure-veg counterpart — and it has the longevity to prove it, having served Vapi since 1990. It's a proper all-rounder: Gujarati and Punjabi thali, North Indian, South Indian, Chinese, the works, all vegetarian.

The dishes I'd steer you toward are the comfort-food heroes. Chole bhature — two puffed, golden bhature with a deeply spiced chickpea curry — is the kind of plate that ruins your afternoon productivity in the best way. Dahi vada, soft lentil dumplings drowned in cool whisked yogurt with sweet-tangy chutneys, is the perfect foil to the heat. And the South Indian side (crisp dosas, soft idlis, sambar and chutney) means there's something for every mood at the table.

A good pure-veg kitchen doesn't feel like a compromise. It feels like abundance.

For families, for mixed groups, for anyone who wants a big, varied, entirely vegetarian meal near Daman, Papillon is an easy yes.
